Dept. of Phlebology
Reviving circulation, empowering vascular health with expertise.
Phlebology: Overview
At the Department of Phlebology at St. Thomas Hospital, Chethipuzha, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive care for vascular conditions, with a special focus on venous disorders. Our experienced team is committed to enhancing your health and well-being through advanced diagnostic techniques and innovative treatments.
Our modern diagnostic laboratory ensures accurate assessment of venous conditions, while advanced imaging technologies aid in precise diagnosis. We offer a range of minimally invasive procedures, including endovenous laser treatment, sclerotherapy, and venous ablation, all performed in our well-appointed treatment rooms. Our team prioritizes your comfort, safety, and exceptional outcomes, working seamlessly to deliver the highest standard of care.
Research Focus and Collaboration
The St. Thomas Institute of Research on Venous Diseases, a key part of our hospital, is dedicated to advancing the understanding and treatment of venous disorders. We collaborate with the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB), Thiruvananthapuram and Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, to drive innovative research and improve vascular health outcomes. This partnership allows us to integrate the latest research findings into our clinical practice, ensuring that our patients benefit from cutting-edge treatments.
Why Choose Us?
When it comes to addressing venous disorders, St. Thomas Hospital’s Phlebology Department stands out for several reasons, particularly with our use of Modified Microfoam Sclerotherapy (MMFST):
Innovative Treatment: We specialize in Modified Microfoam Sclerotherapy (MMFST), a cutting-edge technique designed to address venous conditions with precision. MMFST leverages our understanding of microscopic veins and microcirculatory impediments to provide targeted treatment.
Advanced Technique: MMFST uses Microfoam Polidocanol (POL) to effectively eliminate the superficial venous system. This technique involves injecting POL into fine tributaries, ensuring a centrifugal retrograde distribution from larger to smaller veins. This unique approach helps prevent backflow and ensures thorough treatment of minute collecting veins.
Precise and Effective: The specific properties of POL enable it to target and treat veins by addressing the collecting venous system at the tissue level. This results in more effective elimination of problematic veins compared to traditional methods, which may direct medication from smaller to larger veins.
Understanding Varicose Veins: Varicose veins are often misunderstood as a disease, but they are actually a natural physiological phenomenon. These veins, which are enlarged, twisted, and sometimes bulging, are a response to the everyday stresses on our circulatory system. The term "varicose" means "dilated and tortuous," accurately describing their appearance. They are not a sign of illness but a common condition affecting the lower limbs.
Patient-Centric Approach: We provide a personalized treatment experience, focusing on your comfort and achieving optimal outcomes through the latest techniques and technology.

Microfoam Sclerotherapy [MMFST]
Modified Microfoam Sclerotherapy (MMFST) is a new technique based on knowledge of the microscopic veins and micro circulatory impediment. In order to prevent the backflow towards the capillary through the superficial venous system the collecting venous system at the tissue level has to be eliminated by a good sclerosant - Polidocanol [POL].
The treatment is initiated by elimination of the superficial venous system from foot towards the leg by injecting Microfoam Polidocanol through the very fine tributaries. The specific property of POL is made use of in eliminating the minute collecting system. The drug has a centrifugal retrograde distribution from bigger to smaller and from smaller to smallest veins unlike any other IV injections, which promptly go from smaller to the bigger and to the heart.
